Using Gold to Decontaminate Water

Recently, at the University of Sharjah, in Dubai, it has been shown that gold, silver and platinum are the most efficient compounds at decontaminating water. Associate Professor of Chemistry and Lead Researcher Dr. SofianKanan, made the discovery.

The study was commissioned due to growing populations worldwide, resulting in increased demand for food.  In turn, pesticides are being used more widely, and that means more and more is being absorbed into the Earth’s water every day.

“Once sprayed with pesticides, the plant or crop will take the minimum amount it requires then the rest is released into the groundwater or the sea”, said Dr. Kanan.

Studies have shown that the use of these precious metals can reduce the lifespan of a pesticide from 30 days to 30 minutes.

With gold prices hovering around $1,500 an ounce, scientists found a way to use a modified metal with compounds of gold, silver and platinum to decompose the harmful chemicals, which will mean safer human water consumption.

As a member of the precious metals industry, Manhattan Gold & Silver is excited to learn how science and technology expand the uses of precious metals, and how these metals continue to demonstrate practical applications far beyond what anyone ever imagined.
