Precious Metal Verifying Devices

With more than 30 years of experience assaying precious metals, we know how critical it is to get accurate results so all of our customers get a fair payout. We can’t tell you how many times over the years that customers have brought us what they believed to be 100% silver scraps, only for us to tell them it contains a substantial amount of platinum too. The look on their faces when we update their payout quote is just the best! Moments like these are only possible because MGS invests in the highest quality assay tools and technology – the latest of which are precious metal verifiers.

Verifiers works by measuring the electrical resistivity of the test sample. Resistivity quantifies how strongly a given material opposes the flow of electric current and is measured in ohms (Ω). First, you input the metal type and the weight of the sample. Next, the verifier uses a signal to measure the surface resistivity of the sample. Then it sends another signal completely through the sample to measure the through-resistivity and thickness of the sample. By checking the sample’s through-resistivity against its surface resistivity, the verifier can detect whether a sample is plated or filled.

Using these measurements, the verifier can authenticate a sample’s composition without scratching or damage – even through numismatic protective cases and bullion blister packs. Like the majority of our assay services, we provide precious metal verification to our clients free of charge.
